While 2020 has not afforded much in the way of positive news, one particularly bright spot has been the Black is Beautiful initiative started by San Antonio’s own Weathered Souls Brewing Co. And while it’s unfortunate that it followed the heinous murder of George Floyd—and indeed decades upon decades (upon decades) of racial injustice against people of color in America—we must celebrate the awareness and positive reaction that Black is Beautiful has produced in response to the tragedy.
In head brewer and founder Marcus Baskerville’s own words:
The Black is Beautiful initiative is a collaborative effort amongst the brewing community and its customers, in an attempt to bring awareness to the injustices that many people of color face daily. Our mission is to bridge the gap that's been around for ages and provide a platform to show that the brewing community is an inclusive place for everyone of any color. We are asking for all breweries and brewers far and wide to raise a glass with us in unison and participate in this collaboration.
